Silly Symphony Short Cartoons |
In the 1930's the Silly Symphony series of short animated films became a showcase for the Disney artists. Animators were allowed to let their imaginations run a little freer, not being locked into the demands of a single character. The Symphonies were intended to have no recurring characters --although a few of the regular characters did appear in a few. This cartoon series enabled the Disney artists to experiment with new techniques. Disney's first color short was a Silly Symphony. The multi-plane camera ( giving flat, two-dimensional animation a three dimensional look) started here. "Silly Symphony" cartoons also saw the first attempt at animating realistic human figures -- a necessary step before they started on their first feature length film "Snow White" 1937. Silly Symphonies also gave us the first short where Disney felt true character had finally been achieved: "The Three Little Pigs" 1933. 75 different Silly Symphonies were created over a ten year span (1929-1939). The series was discontinued once animated feature films proved to be so successful. |

Horace Horsecollar is an anthropomorphic horse created by both Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney in the early years of the Disney Studio. Horace first appeared in the black and white 1929’s The Plowboy as Mickey Mouse‘s cocky, yet good-natured best friend and steed. He gets his name from the giant horse collar around his neck. Horace and Clarabelle the Cow joined Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in cartoon antics from 1930-1942. In more recent years Horace made cameo appearances in "Mickey's Christmas Carol" (1983) and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988). Horace had a bigger role as the Prince's (Mickey's royal double) stone-faced tutor in "The Prince and the Pauper" (1990). Horace Horsecollar was a sweet early Disney character with lots of personality. We are proud to offer several pieces of animation art from his early career in Disney cartoons! |
